Poetry in the Park

In honor of National Poetry Month, we invite you to join us for an afternoon to celebrate poetry. Notable poets such as Walt Whitman, Marianne Moore, Denise Bell, and Richard Wright drew inspiration from Fort Greene Park.

Poetry in the Park is an opportunity to participate in a poetry workshop led by Najee Omar, be part of a supportive environment during our Open Mic session, and enjoy poetry performances by Jennifer Falú, Joselia Rebekah Hughes, and Liz Chestang.

Feel free to come and go as you please throughout the day. Open Mic will start at 1:45pm and featured performances will follow! See below for a detailed event schedule:

  • 11:30am – Doors open! Walt Whitman Library will lead a Blackout Poetry activity until the end of the event.

  • 12:00pm - 1:30pm – (Nothing But) Flowers: A Writing Workshop led by Najee Omar. Space is limited. RSVP is encouraged but not required. Workshop spots are first come, first served.

About the (Nothing But) Flowers A Writing Workshop

Join poet Najee Omar for a free immersive poetry workshop, where the enchanting themes of love and nature intertwine against the backdrop of Fort Greene Park's scenic beauty. It's giving Big Venus Energy! Open to writers of all levels, we will meet as a group to discuss sources of inspiration ranging from the words of Pablo Neruda to the ballads of Alex Isley. We will draw upon the plants and trees to explore connections between human emotion and the natural world. We will reach back to our past, pour into our present, and imagine ourselves in the future to capture the essence of our love journeys. We will write, meditate, and share our poems until our words bloom like wildflowers on Myrtle Ave. Come, wander with us, through love's tender embrace and nature's timeless allure.
