As part of the City-funded Zone Management program, additional maintenance and enforcement staff dedicated to the park keep our landscape cleaner, safer, and greener throughout the year. One of six Parks Enforcement workers assigned to Fort Greene Park, Officer Esmeraldo Maldonado has been with NYC Parks for 20 years.
I hear the staff refer to you and Officer Torres as “the twins.” How long have you been working together? Any favorite memories of working with her?
I’ve been working in Parks for 20 years, and she’s been in Parks for 19 years, but I was in Central Park and she was out in Brooklyn. We’ve been working together here for 3 years. We’re always joking around with each other. Not a day goes by that I don’t have a smile on my face when she’s around!
What enforcement issues keep you busy?
In the winter, it’s mostly looking for dogs that are off leash. We patrol every hour and spot check. The summers are the hardest. You still have the dogs! But you’ve got vendors, smokers, all the kids we have to keep an eye on, illegal barbecuing, and the occasional fight.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love interacting with all the people. But I really love just being outside. Even though I’m not a ranger, I love being around all the animals.
When you are not working in the park, what do you for fun?
I love to just hang out with my family. I have one son, and my lady has two daughters. I love animals: At home, I’ve got a land turtle, dogs, and fish. My land turtle is this big (gestures about 1 1/2 feet in diameter). One entire corner of my house is a desert landscape just for the land turtle! I have a Yorkie named Prince; my mom has a Yorkie and Shih Tzu named Rocky and Peanut. My lady wants to get a bird, either a Macaw or a Cockatoo. But I’m not sure; I’m researching it! I love all kinds of music: House, Reggae, Rap, R&B. I used to go to clubs but I don’t anymore. But back in the day, my favorite was Biggie Smalls. In the summer, I try to stay after work for some of Soul Summit. This year, I may bring a blanket and some dinner and stay for the whole thing!
